Classification of Teak Logs

BRIEF DESCRIPTION ON THE CLASSIFICATION OF TEAK LOGS

Details regarding the export and sawing grades quality logs are given below:

(1) Veneer Quality

There are five grades - Special, First, Second, Third, Fourth. The girth and length limits specified for each grade are stated below:

Annual rings should be regular. 

Maximum number of defects permissible for each grade has been mentioned in next table. These are 12 major defects and 12 minor defects.

A teak log of special quality must be free from ten defects: - Bee hole, Elephant skin, End flute mark, Green band, Double heart, Doyo, In bark. Pitch pocket. Triangular shape and Ring shake.

In the First, Second and Third Quality, the bigger the girth is, the more permissible the defects are. For example:

(1) In the case of the First Quality log with girth 4'-0" to 4'-II" no bee hole is permitted, but in the case of a log of the same quality with girth 6' and up, one bee hole is permitted.

(2) In the case of a log of the First Quality with the same girth, no green band is allowed, but in the case of a log of the same quality with girth 6' and up, green band is permitted with some restrictions.

(3) In the case of a log of the Second Quality with girth 4'-2" to 4'- 11", no green band is permitted, but in the case of a log of the same quality with girth 5' and up, green band is permitted with some restrictions.

Special Market Specifications

These specifications intended for dimensions stock such as Decks and Margin pieces , shall have only one grade in each case .

General Requirement : These shall be well manufactured with cross sections rectangular throughout ; sawn full , thickness and width being 1/8" ( 0.30 cm ) full to the normal dimensions at the time of milling ; fairly straight grained , sound and free from injurious worm or beeholes splits . shakes , sapwood , large knots not exceeding 1,25" ( 3.80 cm ) diameter or unsound knots , corner knots , ingrown bark , wane , heart centres , or imperfections due to heart centre , excessive discoloration and rot , or other injurious defects , unless otherwise specified.

Decks : Upper face and the upper half of the calking edge shall be clear . One perfectly sound knot , but exceeding 1" ( 2.60 cm ) in diameter for every 10' ( 3 meter ) will be allowed . For decks of 10' ( 3 meter ) and longer up to 20' ( 6 meter ) two knots will be allowed provided that the distance between the knots is not less than one-third of the length of the piece . For decks longer than 20' ( 6 meter ) , three knots will be allowed , and the distance between each should be at least one - third of the length of the piece
